Fun-A-Day: Mirror Selves (2024)

For this month-long project I invited friends and family to send me mirror selfies to render in watercolor. (More Fun-A-Day projects here.)

Mirror selfies combine some of my favorite visual preoccupations: complex optics, glass and light, posed self-presentation, impossible eye contact. Thirst traps with toilets in the background. Peeks into messy bedrooms and private spaces. Hands positioned forwards. A phone camera focused on itself. I loved dissecting the casual or studied choices that went into each self-portrait, and translating it into the slower medium of brushstrokes and layered color. I also learned so much from the repeated chance to attempt the likeness of people I loved, with varying satisfaction. Thank you for gazing with me.
